January 28, 2008 Joe Beaman, Chair of Mechanical Engineering and LFF member, is the recipient of a 2008 Women in Engineering Advocate Award this week. The Women in Engineering Advocate Award recognizes an outstanding faculty member, viewed by students and Women in Engineering Program as helping advance women in the field of engineering.
December 10, 2007 Dave Bourell, Director of the LFF, visited Drs. Kevin McAlea and Thomas Pang at 3D Systems Corporate Headquarters in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
November 8, 2007 The LFF provided just over 260 freeformed parts for the UT System Board of Regents banquet, per a request from the UT President's Office. Kudos to Brian South and friends for making this happen.
November 5, 2007 The LFF is pleased to welcome Mark Phillips as a new staff member supporting the lab. His responsibilities will include machine maintenance/operation and general oversight of the LFF facilities and supplies.
September 28, 2007 Students and faculty from the LFF visit and tour service bureau Harvest Technologies in Belton, Texas.
September 17, 2007 Dr. Janet Ellzey recently joined the Laboratory for Freeform Fabrication. She specializes in combustion and fluid mechanics, particularly in the areas of combustion modeling and combustion of porous media. Dr. Ellzey is a faculty member of the Thermal/Fluid Systems program of the Mechanical Engineering Department and is currently Assistant Dean of International Engineering Education.
August 31, 2007 Joseph Lin, a 2006 BSME and Plan II graduate, has earned a prestigious University Coop/Mitchell UG Award for Academic Excellence for his undergraduate research in engineering design, supervised by Dr. Carolyn Seepersad (LFF faculty).
August 9, 2007 Professor G.R.N.Tagore, Head fo the Mechanical Engineering Department at the National Institute of Technology, Warangal, India visits the LFF
August 6-8, 2007 Solid Freeform Fabrication Symposium, hosted by the LFF and held on The University of Texas at Austin campus
July 20, 2007 Dr. Steven Nichols, Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Center, received the American Society for Engineering Education 2007 Kaufmann Outstanding Entrepreneurship Award
July 20, 2007 Dr. Joseph H. Koo, mechanical engineering senior research scientist and member of the LFF, received the Fellows Award from the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE).
July 2007 Dr. Rick Neptune, professor of mechanical engineering and member of the LFF, received a four-year, $1.3 million grant to improve computer tools for assisting people with stroke-related impairments in walking.
June 2007 LFF faculty Bourell, Beaman and Wood team with chemists to win a $5.9 million five year MURI grant to develop next-generation direct methanol fuel cells
June 1, 2007 Dr. Steven Nichols becomes Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Center of which the LFF is a part. Dr. Nichols holds the Clint W. Murchison Chair of Free Enterprise.
